The 1972 World Series of Poker will start on May 13 with a variety of cash games. The $5,000 No-Limit Hold 'Em Main Event will begin on May 17 with Benny Binion sweetening the prize pool with an extra $5,000 per player.

All of the chips go in on the flop, with Puggy Pearson's two pairs badly trailing Amarillo Slim Preston's and needing one of the two remaining Sixes.

The Eight on the turn gives Pearson another small glimmer of hope as the case Eight will chop, but the river is a blank, and Amarillo Slim becomes the new champ.

His appearances on talk shows afterwards greatly popularize poker.
