Main Event Final Hand
[Hide Final Hand]

Hamid Dastmalchi holds the chip lead going into the final table and maintains the advantage as the field narrows to two. Before heads-up play begins, he does a headstand in a corner of the room to get the blood rushing to his head because, "It makes you think better."

On the final hand, he makes a loose call with complete garbage preflop and check-calls a small flop bet with just an inside straight draw. His money card hits on the turn, and he checks, inducing Tom Jacobs to shove with two pairs. None of Jacobs's four outs hit, and Dastmalchi is a million dollars richer. Jacobs wins $353,500, a drop from the previous year's prize as the field shrank for the first time.

WSOP Wrapup
[Hide Wrap Up]

Erik Seidel ($2,500 Limit Hold 'Em) and Men Nguyen ($1,500 Seven-Card Stud) both won their first career bracelets.

For the first time in WSOP Main Event history, the number of entrants dropped, from 215 to 201. And even as the number of events reached twenty for the first time, the total prizes awarded dropped for the first time, from $7,831,000 to $7,769,001.

The number of entrants also dropped, from 141 to 95, for the Women's Seven-Card Stud tournament, but this was mostly because the buyin was increased from $500 to $1,000, which created a record $155,000 prize pool and $38,000 first prize (won by Shari Flanzer).
