Main Event Final Hand
[Hide Final Hand]

Glenn Cozen is on a short stack but ahead of John Bonetti with three players remaining when he is dealt pocket Sixes. When a third Six hits on the flop, he slowplays his well-hidden monster and lets Bonetti do all of the betting with his top pair, top kicker.

That still leaves him short as heads-up play begins, and just three hands later, he shoves all in preflop with rags. Jim Bechtel calls with a better but still bad hand. The board misses everything, letting him win with a mere Jack-high, the worst final winning hand in WSOP Main Event history.

Bechtel, who finished sixth in the 1988 Main Event, collects $1,000,000, while Cozen earns $420,000.

WSOP Wrapup
[Hide Wrap Up]

Humberto Brenes had a great year winning two bracelets, but Phil Hellmuth and Ted Forrest both did him one better, matching Puggy Pearson's one-year record of three. Hellmuth's wins were all in Hold 'Em, while Forrest prevailed in Razz, Omaha 8 or Better, and Seven-Card Stud. Both players won consecutive events.

Brenes became the first player from Costa Rica to win a WSOP bracelet.

A record eight women entered the Main Event, including Teresa McMillan who outlasted her husband Ron as they became the first married couple to play in the same Main Event.

For the first time, two women cashed in the Main Event -- Wendeen Eolis (20th) and Marsha Waggoner (19th) both collected $12,000.
