Main Event Final Hand
[Hide Final Hand]

Dan Harrington, who won the $2,500 No-Limit Hold 'Em event a few days earlier, starts the heads-up battle with a 3-to-2 chip advantage over the Canadian Howard Goldfarb, who was the final table chip leader. Harrington increases his lead to over 3-to-1, setting the stage for the last hand.

Harrington calls Goldfarb's preflop raise and checks the low flop. Goldfarb takes the bait and moves all in with nothing and gets an easy call from his opponent. The turn and river are harmless, and Harrington pockets a million dollars.

Goldfarb takes home $519,000, a drop caused by a flatter payout structure.

WSOP Wrapup
[Hide Wrap Up]

Hilbert Shirey won both $2,500 Pot-Limit events, in Omaha and Hold 'Em, while Men Nguyen won two other $2,500 events, the Seven-Card Stud Hi/Lo and the Limit Hold 'Em. Shirey's wins were in consecutive events (the last player to accomplish this feat).

Dan Harrington one-upped them both by winning the $2,500 No-Limit Hold 'Em and the $10,000 Main Event.

Walter Farina won Italy's first WSOP bracelet in the $1,500 Seven-Card Stud.

Barbara Enright became the first and still only woman to reach the final table of the Main Event, finishing fifth for $114,180 when her pocket Eights took a bad beat from Brent Carter's Six-Three flopping two pairs. Enright became the leading money-winner in WSOP history with $170,960, dethroning Marsha Waggoner, who had just taken the lead with a $35,700 third place finish in the $2,500 buy-in Omaha high-low split tournament to get to $111,360.

Annie Duke and Howard Lederer became the first time sister and brother to reach the same WSOP final table in the $1,500 buy-in Pot-Limit Hold 'Em with Duke finishing 6th and Lederer 9th.

With a second place finish in the $5,000 buy-in seven-card stud event for $88,550, T.J. Cloutier became the first player to top a million dollars in WSOP winnings ($1,008,610) without winning the Main Event.
