Main Event Final Hand
[Hide Final Hand]

For the first and only time, the WSOP Main Event final table is played outside, causing heat and wind troubles. Stu Ungar starts with the final table chip lead and easily reaches heads-up play with a 3-to-1 chip lead over John Strzemp.

With both players holding a pair of Aces on the flop, Strzemp bets, calls Ungar's all in raise, and has a 65% chance of winning the hand, nearly the same as he had preflop. The turn hurts Strzemp a bit, as any Nine or higher will chop the pot, but the river is one of the seven cards that can kill him, filling in Ungar's straight.

Ungar wins $1,000,000 for his his record-tying third championship and the last cash of his career, while Strzemp wins $583,000.

WSOP Wrapup
[Hide Wrap Up]

For the first time, two women won open bracelets. Linda Johnson won the $1,500 Seven-Card Razz, and Maria Stern the $1,500 Seven-Card Stud.

Not to be outdone by his wife, Max Stern was the year's only double-bracelet winner, taking down the $2,500 Seven-Card Stud 8 or Better and the $3,000 No-Limit Hold 'Em. They remain the only husband and wife to win bracelets in the same year outside of team events.

Chris Bjorin won Sweden's first WSOP bracelet in the $1,500 Pot-Limit Omaha, and Matthias Rohnacher won Germany's first in the $2,500 Pot-Limit Omaha.

Susie Isaacs became the first player to win back-to-back WSOP Ladies Championships to join Barbara Enright as the only two-time winners in the event.

Dan Heimiller cashed in six events to lead all players. Tom McEvoy was second with four, including a third-place finish in the $2,000 Pot-Limit Hold 'Em that put him over one million dollars in career WSOP winnings.
