Main Event Final Hand
[Hide Final Hand]

Scotty Nguyen takes out two players on the TV final table bubble when he rivers the nut flush to begin the five-player finale with a decent chip lead over Kevin McBride and T.J. Cloutier. But McBride keeps finding the cards he needs and knocking people out and takes a nearly 2-to-1 edge going into heads up.

His calling station strategy doesn't work well heads up, however, and Nguyen jumps to a 5-to-1 chip lead. McBride finally chooses to bet on the final hand, as Nguyen slowplays his monster and only moves all in with a boat showing on the board. McBride calls and plays the board. Nguyen shows his Nine and collects the million dollars, while McBride wins $687,500.

WSOP Wrapup
[Hide Wrap Up]

Stu Ungar's million-dollar Main Event victory, his record-tying third, was the final cash of his career as he did not return to play in the WSOP the following year and passed away from his mostly self-inflicted ailments that November.

Doyle Brunson won his eighth bracelet in the $1,500 Razz to pull within one of Johnny Moss.

Donnacha O'Dea won Ireland's first WSOP bracelet in the $1,500 Pot-Limit Omaha, and Daniel Negreanu won Canada's first in the $2,000 Pot-Limit Hold 'Em.

Daniel Negreanu won the $2,000 Pot-Limit Hold 'Em to become either the youngest or second youngest WSOP bracelet winner at age 23 (Jeff Sandow may have been a younger 23 in 1977).

Actor Matt Damon got knocked out of the Main Event early when he ran his pocket Kings into Doyle Brunson's pocket Aces.
