Robert Varkonyi, an investment banker, and Julian Gardner, a British poker pro, enter the final table in fourth and seventh places respectively but survive to heads-up play, where the New Yorker builds a 6-to-1 chip lead. On the button, Varkonyi raises with two low honors. Gardner calls, sees a flop that gives him a flush draw, and check-raises all in.

Varkonyi calls with his top pair and is a 2-to-1 favorite. The turn isn't a club, but the river is. Unfortunately for Gardner, both cards also hit Varkonyi, who improves to a winning full house and becomes the first two million dollar champ. The young Gardner drowns his sorrows with the $1,100,000 second prize.

WSOP Wrapup

Phil Ivey made his mark by jumping from one bracelet to four, winning the $1,500 Seven-Card Stud, the $2,500 Seven-Card Stud 8, and the $2,000 S.H.O.E.

Layne Flack won the $2,000 No-Limit Hold 'Em and the $1,500 No-Limit Hold 'Em.

Johnny Chan and Bill Baxter both won their seventh bracelets. Chan won heads-up against Phil Hellmuth, who had notched number seven the previous year.

Jennifer Harman won the $5,000 Limit Hold 'Em to become the first woman with two open event bracelets.

Three players won the first WSOP bracelet for their country:

Hellmuth made a buzz in the Main Event long after he exited, having lost most of his chips to Robert Varkonyi. Announcing for ESPN, the Poker Brat promised that if Varkonyi won, he'd shave his head, and he kept his word. After Varkonyi's victory, an electric razor was brought to the stage and the new champ removed the first locks of the 1989 champ's hair before Becky Binion took over to finish the job. The hair was then sold for charity.
