Main Event Final Hand
[Hide Final Hand]

Chris Moneymaker, an accountant from Tennessee who won his buyin for the Main Event in a pair of online satellites, has already knocked out Johnny Chan and made the money. He then sucked out on Phil Ivey to knock him out on the final table bubble and entered the final table with a decent chip lead.

Sam Farha, who reached the last nine in third place, is still almost 2-to-1 behind when heads-up action begins. The deficit has increased before he flops top pair on the final hand. Moneymaker check-raises him and calls his all in response with two pairs, which hold up to win $2,500,000. Farha earns $1,300,000 for second.

WSOP Wrapup

A record six players won two bracelets: Chris Ferguson, John Juanda, Johnny Chan, Layne Flack, Men Nguyen, and Phil Hellmuth. The previous high was only three players.

Hellmuth's second caught him up with Doyle Brunson and Johnny Chan, who both tied Johnny Moss at nine bracelets earlier in the festival. The race to ten was on!

Amir Vahedi won Iran's first bracelet in the $1,500 No-Limit Hold 'Em.

For the second year in a row, the third-place finisher in the Employees event went on to win an open tournament. In 2002, Mike Majerus won the very next event, the $2,000 Limit Hold 'Em. This year John Arrage had to wait until event #17, the $1,500 Limit Hold 'Em.

A record three women were runners-up in open events: Annie Duke, Kathy Liebert, and Mimi Tran.
