Main Event Final Hand

Steve Dannenmann, a Maryland CPA, and Joe Hachem, an Australian poker pro, reach the final table in fifth and sixth in chips with virtually identical stacks, but Hachem builds a 5-to-2 advantage going into heads-up play.

After a very long final table, the last hand occurs on only the sixth hand of two-way action. Hachem makes a very loose call preflop but is rewarded by flopping the second nuts. He makes a small check-raise, which Dannenmann calls with his straight draw. Hachem bets and reraises all in on the turn. Having improved to a pair of Aces, the amateur calls.

Hachem earns $7,500,000, while Dannenmann collects $4,250,000.

WSOP Wrapup
[Hide Wrap Up]

Mark Seif was the only double-bracelet winner, taking down the $1,500 Limit Hold 'Em Shootout and the $1,500 No-Limit Hold 'Em.

Todd Brunson won the $2,500 Omaha Hi/Lo to join his father Doyle as the only parent and child to own WSOP bracelets.

Johnny Chan won the race to ten bracelets by capturing the $2,500 Pot-Limit Hold 'Em, but Doyle Brunson matched him just four days later in the $5,000 Short-Handed No-Limit Hold 'Em (also making Doyle and Todd the first parent and child to win bracelets in the same year).

Rafi Amit won Israel's first WSOP bracelet in the $10,000 Pot-Limit Omaha, and Jiang Chen won China's first in the $1,000 No-Limit Hold 'Em.

Eric Froehlich won the $1,500 Limit Hold 'Em to take over the crown as youngest WSOP winner at age 21.

The poker boom was in full force. The total prizes awarded ($21,789,060 to $45,973,770 to $106,055,907), number of players (7,572 to 14,054 to 32,341), and Main Event field (839 to 2,576 to 5,619) all doubled for the second straight year. While the number of events increased modestly (36 to 33 to 42), the average field size soared (210 to 426 to 770).

Allen Cunningham became the first player to win over a million dollars in preliminary events in one year ($1,007,115 across five cashes including four final tables and a bracelet), to comfortably beat Mark Seif for the WSOP Player of the Year award.
