2012 World Series of Poker

2012 WSOP Overview
[Hide Overview]

The 2012 World Series of Poker started on May 27 with the $500 Casino Employees Event. The Main Event was scheduled to run for nine days starting on July 7 (with a break for the November Nine), the 61st event of the festival, an increase of three from 2011.

The million-dollar buyin Big One for One Drop debuted, shattering the record for the highest buyin by twenty times. Guy Laliberte's charity event promised $111,111 of every buyin to the One Drop Foundation to provide clean water around the world.

The World Series of Poker Europe was held in September with seven events, the same number as in 2011.

Main Event Final Hand
[Hide Final Hand]

Jesse Sylvia starts the November Nine with the most chips, while Greg Merson is in third with about two-thirds of his stack. After it took 382 hands to get from nine players down to two, heads-up action lasts only seventeen hands. Merson has a nearly 3-to-2 lead after he knocks Jake Balsiger out in third, and he quickly extends that to almost 2-to-1.

On the final hand, Merson raises and four-bets all in preflop. Sylvia makes a reasonable call with suited connectors as he has a 45.0% chance to win the hand. Unfortunately, the board delivers five useless undercards, and the final, massive pot is Merson's. First place is worth a bracelet and $8,527,982, while second pays $5,295,149.

WSOP Wrapup
[Hide Wrap Up]

Greg Ostrander was officially awarded the 1,000th bracelet in WSOP History. Accounting for one chop and five Mixed Doubles tournaments, Steven Loube won event #1,000, the $1,500 Pot-Limit Omaha Hi/Lo, a few days later.

Greg Merson won the $10,000 6-Handed No-Limit Hold 'Em to go with his Main Event bracelet and relegated Phil Hellmuth to second place in the final WSOP Player of the Year standings for an incredible third time in seven years.

Antonio Esfandiari ($1,000,000 Big One for One Drop and €1,000 No-Limit Hold 'Em) and Phil Hellmuth ($2,500 Razz and WSOP Europe Main Event) both earned a bracelet on each side of the Atlantic. Hellmuth got his first non-Hold 'Em bracelet, became the first and still the only player to win both the WSOP Main Event and the WSOP Europe Main Event, and increased his bracelet total to 13. Esfandiari's One Drop title was worth a record $18,346,673.

Countries With Their First Bracelets

Five countries broke into the win column for the first time:

Women at the WSOP

Vanessa Selbst won her second bracelet in the $2,500 10-Game Mix - Six Handed.

Allyn Jaffrey Shulman became the second woman to win the Seniors Championship overcoming a massive field of 4,128 to win $603,713. In the same week, both her husband Barry (8th place in $1,500 No-Limit Hold 'Em) and son Jeff (3rd place in $5,000 Limit Hold' Em) also reached final tables.

Two women were among the last eleven players in the Main Event, but Elisabeth Hille exited in 11th, and Gaelle Baumann followed shortly in 10th, both winning $590,442.
