2013 World Series of Poker

2013 WSOP Overview
[Hide Overview]

The 2013 World Series of Poker started on May 29 with the $500 Casino Employees Event. The Main Event was scheduled to run for nine days starting on July 6 (with a break for the November Nine), the 62nd event of the festival, an increase of one from 2012.

The World Series of Poker Asia-Pacific debuted in April with five events: three in No-Limit Hold 'Em, one in Pot-Limit Omaha, and one 8-Game mix. The World Series of Poker Europe was held in September with seven events, unchanged from the previous two years. This was the only year in which both were held.

Main Event Final Table
[Hide Final Table]

Congratulations to Ryan Riess! The Michigander was only fifth in chips going into the final table and played terrifically.

The youngest player at the table has now won four of the six years of the November Nine.1

Local favorite Jay Farber held on to reach heads up but couldn't overcome Riess's huge chip advantage. Amir Lehavot started second but finished third, while Sylvain Loosli started sixth and moved up to fourth.

J.C. Tran, who began with the chip lead, quickly went from a fifth of the chips to fifth place. He did have bad cards though, so it's not a huge surprise that he had the lowest finish of any November Nine chip leader.2

Main Event Final Hand
[Hide Final Hand]

Jay Farber, a local nightclub promoter who began the final table in fourth, starts heads-up play with a small lead over Ryan Riess, a Michigan-born pro who started in fifth. The amateur falls behind for the first time on hand 20 then loses a big pot to Riess's pocket Jacks thirteen hands later to fall into a hole he will never recover from.

By the final hand, the 90th of heads-up play, the amateur is very short-stacked and three-bets all in with a below average holding. Riess the Beast makes an easy call with Big Slick, which is 65.3% to win and holds up to clinch the title and the $8,359,531 first prize. Farber takes home $5,173,170.
