2015 World Series of Poker

2015 WSOP Overview
[Hide Overview]

The 2015 World Series of Poker started on May 27 with the $565 Casino Employees Event. The Main Event was scheduled to run for ten days starting on July 5 (with a break for the November Nine), the 68th event of the festival, an increase of three from 2014.

The schedule included the first Super Seniors Championship (minimum age 65), the first online bracelet event, and the return of team events with the new 2- to 4-player Tag Team tournament. The Main Event's payouts assured that 1,000 players would make the money while each final table player would receive at least a million dollars.

The World Series of Poker Europe was held in October with ten events: seven in No-Limit Hold 'Em, two in Pot-Limit Omaha, and one 8-Game mix.

After the 68-event WSOP in Las Vegas from May to July, WSOP Europe moves to Germany's Spielbank Berlin for ten events in October.

Main Event Final Table
[Hide Final Table]

Conservative play dominated the 2015 WSOP Main Event final table, but that wasn't Patrick Chan's fault. The New Yorker busted on the second hand when he decided K♠Q♣ was good enough to call for all of his chips preflop. He couldn't catch Joe McKeehen's small Ace and exited in ninth place.

The other short stack, Federico Butteroni, tried to sit back and move up, but the Italian exited in eighth.

Coincidentally, Butteroni, Pierre Neuville (7th), Zvi Stern (5th), and Max Steinberg (4th) all busted holding Ace-Jack. Butteroni, Stern, and Steinberg couldn't catch up to bigger Aces,1 while Neuville got very unlucky when Joe McKeehen backdoored a flush with the dominated J♥6♥.

The sixth-place finisher was even unluckier than Neuville.2 Thomas Cannuli's A♠A♣ were sent to the rail when Steinberg's T♥T♦ flopped a set of Tens.

Once it got to three-way, McKeehen had such a big chip lead with about two-thirds of the chips, that the real battle was between Josh Beckley and Neil Blumenfield for second.

Beckley won that battle for an extra $1.07 million but had under a fifth of the chips. He lasted only twelve hands in heads-up play before his Fours were outraced by Ace-Ten offsuit with a Ten landing on the flop.

McKeehen made it look easy, claiming the title and the $7,683,346 first prize.

Main Event Final Hand
[Hide Final Hand]

Pennsylvania pro Joe McKeehen is the November Nine chip leader, with more than twice as many chips as anyone else, while New Jersey pro Josh Beckley starts in seventh, with just 6.1% of the chips. While McKeehen is never seriously challenged as the chip leader, going wire to wire, Beckley picks his spots well and moves steadily up the pay ladder.

On the last hand, Beckley moves in with his small stack, and McKeehen makes an easy call with his good Ace. When the Ten hits on the flop, Beckley needs but does not get one of the two remaining Fours in the deck. McKeehen earns the title and $7,683,346, while Beckley settles for $4,470,896.
