2016 World Series of Poker

2016 WSOP Overview
[Hide Overview]

The 2016 World Series of Poker started on June 1 with the $565 Casino Employees Event. The Main Event was scheduled to run for ten days starting on July 9 (with a break for the November Nine). The final event to start (on July 12) was the $1,111 No-Limit Hold 'Em for One Drop, the 69th event, an increase of one from 2015.

Payouts in almost all tournaments were increased to 15% of the field instead of 10%.

Updating previous plans, neither the WSOP Europe nor the WSOP Asia-Pacific was held as the latter was put on indefinite hiatus.

Main Event Final Table
[Hide Final Table]

The final November Nines was probably the best. Qui Nguyen kept things exciting, and he certainly deserved his victory.

The pace of play was excellent. The action moved along steadily once the controversial William Kassouf, the human rain delay, busted in 17th place.1

This was the first November Nine where the ninth, eighth, and seventh place players going in busted out in order. Belgian Kenny Hallaert ended the run by exiting in sixth from his original fourth place. Although the table started with only five Americans, when Vojtech Rozicka left in fifth place, the remaining four were all Americans. At that point Michael Ruane was short-stacked, and his strategy of waiting for someone else to bust out so he could move up one place failed. The initial chip leader Cliff Josephy was then undone by losing a massive pot with a set of Twos to Gordon Vayo's set of Threes, which vaulted Vayo into the chip lead.

After Josephy exited a few hands later, Nguyen simply dominated the heads-up action even though it lasted a November Nine-record 182 hands. Nguyen was the aggressor on almost every hand, picking up almost every small and medium pot. Vayo's lead disappeared quickly, but he won a couple of big pots to get it back twice. Ultimately though, his wins became too small to stop the bleeding. He survived one all-in by backdooring a flush, but on the final hand, his suited connectors were taken down by Nguyen's dominating cards.

Nguyen was the most aggressive player at the table, and he pulled off more than a few good bluffs, which was great poker.

Surprisingly, he became the first November Niner to win after starting second in chips.

Amazingly, Nguyen was also the first winner of the November Nine era who wasn't 20-something years old. At 39, he's the same age as Greg Raymer, Joe Hachem, and Jerry Yang, who won in 2004, 2005, and 2007. Robert Varkonyi remains the last 40-year-old to win (2002).

And of course, he became the second Nguyen to win the Main Event after Scotty Nguyen in 1998.

Main Event Final Hand

Main Event rookie Qui Nguyen begins the November Nine just a little behind chip leader Cliff Josephy but enters heads up against Gordon Vayo with only 40% of the chips. With relentless aggression, Nguyen quickly takes the lead only to give it back a couple of times before grabbing it for good.

On the 298th final table hand, Vayo survives an all-in with a backdoor flush to get back to one third of the chips. Nguyen whittles his stack away again until Vayo shoves with his Jack-Ten dominated by Nguyen's King-Ten. Nguyen survives an 8-out straight draw for a well-deserved Main Event bracelet and $8,005,310. Vayo gets $4,661,228.

Benny Glaser ($1,500 Omaha 8 and $10,000 Omaha 8 Championship), Ian Johns ($1,500 H.O.R.S.E. and $10,000 Limit Hold 'Em Championship), and Jason Mercier ($10,000 No-Limit Deuce-to-Seven Draw Championship and $10,000 H.O.R.S.E. Championship) each won two bracelets, but Mercier cashed eleven times with two other final tables to take home the WSOP Player of the Year award.

Two women captured open events: Kristen Bicknell ($1,000 No-Limit Hold 'Em), and Safiya Umerova ($1,500 No-Limit Hold 'Em Shootout).

After taking thirty years to award a billion dollars in bracelet event prizes, the World Series of Poker gave out the second billion dollars in just five years.
