2019 WSOP Overview
[Hide Overview]

The 2019 World Series of Poker started on May 29 with the $500 Casino Employees Event. The Main Event ran for 13 days from July 3 to just after midnight into July 17. The final event starting on July 15 was the $5,000 No-Limit Hold 'Em, the 90th event, an increase of twelve from 2018.

Short Deck Hold 'Em1 debuted with a $10,000-buyin event. Several events were added specifically to celebrate the 50th World Series of Poker: the $500 Big 50, the $50,000 High Roller, and the $1,500 Bracelet Winners Only.

The Big Blind Ante was expanded to all Hold 'Em events to speed up play.

The World Series of Poker Europe ran from late October to early November with fifteen events, five more than 2018 and four more than originally scheduled.

Together, the WSOP in Las Vegas and WSOP Europe will hold over 100 bracelet events for the first time.2

Main Event Final Table
[Hide Final Table]

The 2019 WSOP Main Event, celebrating the 50th running of the World Series of Poker, did not disappoint. With late registration extended into Day 2AB and Day 2C for the first time, the final count of 8,569 players wasn't known until the fifth day of play and fell just 204 short of the all-time record set in 2006 but breaking the record for cashes with 1,286 since payouts had increased from 10% of the field to 15% in 2015.

The huge field guaranteed everyone at the final table at least $1,000,000, with the winner taking home a cool ten million dollars (tied for 2014 for the second most ever).

The survivors included two amateurs, Timothy Su, a Northeastern grad who worked in software development in Boston, and Garry Gates, a survivor of the 2017 Route 91 Harvest mass killings who had once tried his hand at being a poker pro but now worked as a PokerStars Senior Consultant. The table also had two other Americans, Floridian Zhen Cai and Cubs-hat-wearing Chicago native Kevin Maahs.

The four Americans were joined by players from England (Nicholas Marchington, vieing to become the youngest Main Event champ ever), Serbia (Milos Skrbic), Italy (Dario Sammartino), Canada (Alex Livingston), and Germany (Hossein Ensan, the overwhelming chip leader starting with nearly half of the chips).

The bottom three stacks exited in reverse order: Skrbic, Su, then Marchington. Although three of the top four in chips at the start were Americans, none would survive to the final three. Cai went out in sixth and Maahs in fifth. Gates, who began the day comfortably in second place, made a run at Ensan before plummeting out in fourth place. Ensan then held over 64% of the chips, Livingston just 23%, and Sammartino the remaining 13%.

Ensan made an ill-timed turn bluff-raise against Livingston's set of Sixes. Then Livingston rivered a bigger straight to take a decent pot from Sammartino to move into the chip lead briefly. But he couldn't lay down his pocket Kings, losing a big pot to Sammartino's disguised two pairs and effectively traded stacks with him. Sammartino then took the lead before Ensan reasserted himself, while Livingston spiraled downward until he shoved his last 41.1 million chips with Ace-Jack only to get ousted by Ensan's Ace-Queen.

Ensan thus began heads-up play with a 3-to-2 chip lead. Sammartino fought back into the lead but dropped back and held around a third of the chips for a long time. As the clock neared midnight and heads-up play topped the triple-digit mark, Sammartino made his last stand with a multi-way draw but struck out.

Main Event Final Hand
[Hide Final Hand]

Ensan Hossein starts the final table with almost half of the chips and leads most of the way, dropping behind Alex Livingston briefly during 3-way action and behind Dario Sammartino a couple of times heads up. Over the course of a hundred hands, however, he wears Sammartino down, holding over two-thirds of the chips most of the time.

Ensan makes a standard preflop raise, and Sammartino calls despite being out of position. Sammartino check-calls the flop with his flush draw then check-raises all-in on the turn when he adds an inside straight draw. When the river blanks, Ensan wins the second biggest WSOP Main Event in history for $10,000,000. Sammartino wins $6 million.

John Hennigan defeated Daniel Negreanu heads-up to win the $10,000 Seven-Card Stud for $245,451 and tie the Canadian at six bracelets.

Jim Bechtel set a WSOP record for longest span between consecutive bracelets, adding the $10,000 No-Limit Deuce-to-Seven Lowball Draw (for $253,817) to his 1983 Main Event Championship after 26 years, two more than Chip Reese.

Sue Faber won the $500 No-Limit Hold 'Em Salute to Warriors for $121,161. A woman has now won at least one bracelet in the last eight years.

Mike Sexton extended his record to 32 straight years with at least one WSOP cash.

Johnny Chan and Allen Cunningham tied Berry Johnston's record with their tenth Main Event cashes.

Three players won their country's first bracelets: Luis Zedan (El Salvador) won the $1,000 Pot-Limit Omaha for $236,673, Jiyoung Kim (South Korea) won the $1,000 Ladies No-Limit Hold 'Em for $167,308, and James Chen (Taiwan) won WSOP Europe's €250,000 Super High Roller No-Limit Hold 'Em for $3,167,079.

Just a week after Kim's victory, Sejin Park won South Korea's first open event bracelet, taking down the $400 Colossus for $451,272.

The $500 Big 50 No-Limit Hold 'Em smashed both the attendance record with 28,371 and the places paid record with 4,154.

Ryan Eriquezzo became the first player to win the WSOP Circuit Global Casino Championship twice, defeating 128 opponents seven years after winning his only other bracelet.

At the WSOP Europe, Asi Moshe won his second bracelet of the year to become the 50th player to win four career bracelets. His victory in the $1,838 (€1,650) Mixed Pot-Limit Omaha / No-Limit Hold 'Em was worth $108,920. Dash Dudley also won his second of the year in the $617 (€550) Pot-Limit Omaha for $56,961.
